Branded SA Collateral
The theme for the Success Academy spring 2020 gala centered around scholar stories that move us. Whether it's how scholars conquered a challenge or persevered in the face of adversity, these are the stories that go unheard in our families' communities, and highlighting them only makes their achievements that much more impressive. Unfortunately, the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Stories that Move Us
In fall 2021, Success Academies opened its second high school, SA High School of the Liberal Arts – Harlem (HSLA-HA). This was no small task, but it was one I was excited to drive as it was the third installment of our school designs (elementary and middle school designs came from Biber architects and Pentagram). I created a system that allows for a space to facilitate inquiry. When scholars pass through halls that bait them with questions, topics, and concepts, it is likely that new ideas and intersections of understanding will begin to form in their minds.

BNA Staffing sources talent for employers in several types of industries. While their initial request was to refresh the design of their website, we suggested that they also update their identity and branded assets. Working with a developer, we were able to refresh their identity, improve site traffic flow, update and create branded elements, and provide guidance on how to maintain their new graphic standards in house.

In public education, schools receive funding based on how many students are enrolled, thus funding is based on money received per pupil. Public charter schools receive less per-pupil funding than its Department of Education counterparts. As a result, public charter schools have to raise money to fill the gap in per pupil funding. Spring galas, among other initiatives, are a great way to ensure an organization is financially sound for the following school year.

Joy of Discovery
Success Academy Harlem North West (SA-HNW) expanded its dance program by adding two new dance studios. This was part of a pilot program to have specialized middle schools within the SA network. I created a dynamic visual style that expressed the energy that resonates from within the dance studios. Below are posters and banners that feature illustrated compositions and quotes from prominent dance icons.

In 2018, Success Academies had its first high school graduation. Seventeen scholars graduated to go on to four-year colleges and universities. I had the great fortune to design the Success Academies seal which is used on all graduation collateral, including scholar diplomas.

Curriculum Guides provide our families, potential hires, current staff, and donors with a look into what our K–12 scholars are learning. The pattern on the front cover is derived from details found in respective ES, MS, and HS classroom designs.

Campaign: Kids Over Politics
Education reform organizations from across the country were invited to attend our Redefining Possible advocacy conference where they could learn techniques to help advance their own advocacy goals. I took advantage of the conference attendees' pride for their respective cities by creating illustrations for the metropolitan areas that were represented. Attendees then took group photos in front of their own city skyline. This created a sense of camaraderie and reinforced how this could be applied to a social activation for their own organizations' advocacy events.

Since its founding in 2006, Success Academies has had a testing initiative called Slam the Exam. At its core, the initiative is responsible for preparing scholars for the New York state exams that begin in March. Prior to the first state exam, we hold an academic pep rally to build up scholar spirit and confidence. I collaborated closely with our in-house animator to bring my updated logo design and program graphics to life.

Every summer, Success Academies trains at least 700 new teachers and school staff members. The events and programming take place at New York Law School, which is a labyrinth of a building. Creating banners, directional signage, and promotional items help propel teacher training into a high energy and joyful affair.

In 2020, I created illustrations that depict various creatures in the act of "making." These illustrations were used for the faire’s main website and as artwork for the DIY swag station. Faire attendees would have been able to screen print their own t-shirts and watch as their hats were embroidered with the illustration I provided. This would teach attendees how screen printing and embroidery are used to apply an image to clothing. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic postponed the event but we are looking forward to trying it out in 2022.

I took an IDEO course that taught me different techniques for gaining insights into user interactions. I looked into the commuting experiences for people who have physical disabilities. Crowded public transportation systems are an inconvenience for those without a physical disability but I suspected that an inconvenience for some could be outright dangerous for those with a physical disability. Below is a final report I presented to my working group and co-workers.
